Hello and welcome, I am the Webmaster for EventsAdvisor.com, it’s June 09 and we have just launched! The site is an idea that I have been mulling over for about a year now (usually sitting on a wall outside a country pub in the sunshine with a pal of mine called Bob) and I have decided that it is better to build something than just talk about it so here we are.
The site stems from an inspiring interview I heard with Jimmy Wales the founder of Wikipedia. In it he was saying that the internet (in 2009) is currently in its infancy and as it grows and develops, people will look back in 10 years time at Wikipedia and think that was something good and true. This hit home to me and wanted to develop something along the same lines which actually adds value, is interesting, beneficial for users and where commercial gain is not the primary focus. I find much of the Twitter, Myspace and Facebook fantastic sites but I tire of them quickly. EventsAdvisor.com has the potential to be a veritable mountain of qwerky info which I hope people will find interesting to learn about and also enjoy attending a few of the events.
So what is an Event?
I grew up in a little village called Blewbury (UK) and up in a nearby old disused chalk pit, every Easter they was a great local event. Kids and families would roll painted eggs down the side of the steep banks and the egg which went the furthest without breaking would be the winner. This has been going on for 50 years and it is a great day out for young and old and has a real local community feel. I then realised that in every village, town and community there is a qwerky event that happens once or twice a year other examples are Tar Barrels in Ottery St Mary, Bull running in Spain, Octoberfest in Munich. This is the sort of information which I find truly interesting and I am sure there are others like me. Subsequently I decided to try and put together an online directory of these events .
Users can submit their own event which will be put forward to our team of moderators. Users can also contribute to events that have been inputted and make the content richer through adding photos, videos from YouTube, giving travel advice or even commenting on the description of the event and the history of it. We intend to only feature adverts relating to travel around the events which will hopefully benefit the user experience. We will not capture any data for advertising purposes and we will never become a commercial company we just want people to enjoy the content and to contribute.
Moderators
EventsAdvisor.com aims to provide great content which is accurate for free. EventsAdvisor.com is run by a team of moderators and we are currently looking for more. Should you wish to become a moderator please input an event in your local area and if the quality of it is good enough you will be invited moderate the events in your local area (state/county). Should you prove successful at this we will invite you to become the moderator for the country you are in. Moderators will also be consulted and asked to vote on the direction of the company as new opportunities arise.
Now the site is built Bob and I intend to attempt the world speed record for a human powered boat. I will let you know how we get on...
All the best
